// the maps

Four maps for a human life in an AI age.

Ikigai. The Golden Circle. They were drawn before the machines arrived. These are the ones I draw now.

Not theory. Tools. Each one is a picture you can hold in your head, use on a hard afternoon, and give away to someone you love. Free to take, free to copy, free to argue with. I publish my maps the way some people publish open-source code.

The Unautomatable

Ikigai was a picture. This one moves. Drag the years and watch the water of AI rise over your work. What stays dry is the life to build on.

How to use it

  1. 01Drag the slider. Watch which kinds of work the tide reaches first. The pattern is the lesson.
  2. 02Plot your own week onto the column. How much of it is already underwater, or close?
  3. 03Notice what never gets wet: presence, judgment, earned trust, taste, warmth. That is the high ground.
  4. 04Move your hours upward, year on year. The Unautomatable life is the one AI makes more valuable, not less.

Build from the centre

The world rewards the outer ring. The inner rings are what actually build it. Most people build the wrong way round.

Build from the centre Four nested frames. Presence at the core, then depth, then giving, then reputation as the outer frame. The world sees only the outer frame; the inner ones build it. Build inside-out. Presence unobserved you Depth Giving Reputation the world sees only the outer frame build outward

How to use it

  1. 01Presence is the core: who you are when no one is watching or paying. Protect it first.
  2. 02Depth is the second ring: what you genuinely know, earned slowly. It cannot be faked at scale.
  3. 03Giving is the third: what you put into the world without invoicing it.
  4. 04Reputation is only the rim. It is the shadow the inner three cast. Chase it directly and it stays hollow.

The repair loop

When the chemistry settles, love does not end. It changes jobs, from advertising to maintenance. Here is the machine of maintenance.

The repair loop A five-step cycle: friction, notice fast, cross first, repair, trust deepens, then back to friction stronger. Durable love is faster returns, not fewer ruptures. FrictionNotice fastCross firstRepairTrust deepens Faster returns, not fewer ruptures

How to use it

  1. 01Friction is not failure. Two nervous systems and one bathroom guarantee it. Expect it.
  2. 02Notice fast. The cost of a rupture is set by how long it is left, not how big it was.
  3. 03Cross first. Whoever reaches across the distance first is not the weaker one. They are the wiser one.
  4. 04Repair, and the loop tightens. Each clean return makes the next rupture smaller and the bond deeper.

The giving quadrant

Depth without giving curdles. Giving without depth performs. A life worth living lives in one corner of this square.

The giving quadrant Two axes: depth from shallow to deep, and direction from keeping to giving. Four quadrants: the Vault, the Wellspring, the Drift, and Performing. Aim for the Wellspring. The Wellspring deep, and given away The Vault deep, but hoarded Performing giving, for applause The Drift shallow, and closed keeping ←     → giving shallow ←     → deep

How to use it

  1. 01The Drift, shallow and closed, is where most modern life quietly settles. Comfortable. Forgettable.
  2. 02The Vault, deep but hoarded, is the expert who helps no one. Mastery that dies with them.
  3. 03Performing, giving but shallow, is generosity staged for an audience. The applause is the point, not the person.
  4. 04The Wellspring, deep and freely given, is the rarest and the only one that compounds. Aim your whole life at this corner.

Some people want to take one of these further, privately, applied to their own life or work. That is what counsel is for.
